Gloves at the ready ❄️
Winter can transform the Heriot-Watt University campuses into a snowy wonderland, and while it’s fun to enjoy the snow, staying warm and safe is just as important. Here are the best ways to make the most of the season:
1. Get outdoors and enjoy the snow
- Snowball fights & snowman building: Gather your flatmates for a friendly snowball fight or get creative building a snowman. The spacious green areas around the Edinburgh campus are perfect for outdoor fun.
- Explore nearby parks: Venture to places like the Pentland Hills or Hermiston Park for picturesque snowy walks. Wrap up in layers, including a waterproof coat and sturdy shoes with good grip, to avoid slips.
- Sledging: If you can get hold of a sledge, make the most of the slopes on campus or in nearby parks.
2. Stay warm
- Layer Up: Dressing in layers, including thermals, hats, scarves, and gloves, is essential to keep the cold at bay.
- Hot Drinks: Bring a thermos of tea, coffee, or hot chocolate to keep your hands and body warm during outdoor activities.
- Keep Your Space Cosy: If you’re staying inside, use blankets, draught excluders, and hot water bottles to stay snug without relying solely on heating.
3. Be safe in the snow
- Watch for ice: Stick to cleared paths on campus to avoid icy patches. Walk slowly and take short, steady steps to maintain balance.
- Check travel updates: If you’re travelling off-campus, check bus and train schedules, as snow can cause delays or cancellations. Keep an eye on weather warnings to avoid being caught in poor conditions.
- Stay visible: If you’re walking or cycling in snowy or darker conditions, wear reflective clothing or carry a torch to ensure you’re seen.
4. Make the indoors magical
- Host a winter movie marathon: Gather your flatmates, make some popcorn, and watch festive or winter-themed films.
- Cook comfort food: Use the snowy days as an excuse to cook hearty meals like soups, stews, or hot puddings.
- Get creative: If it’s too cold to head out, use the time to try indoor hobbies like painting, knitting, or even baking festive treats.
5. Capture the Moment
Take advantage of the beautiful campus covered in snow by snapping some pictures. The white-dusted trees and serene landscapes make for fantastic Instagram-worthy shots.
