Accommodation FAQs

You may have questions before you arrive at Heriot-Watt

To help answer any questions, here are our most asked questions when it comes to your accommodation and living on campus...

We do not have any accommodation on campus that allows family/ partners to stay with you. If you would like your family to stay with you, please read our off-campus living pages. We do however, allow one overnight guest at a time, for a maximum of 3 days per calendar week.

Once you have applied, we will email you to confirm that we have received your application. If you don’t receive this, please email halls@hw.ac.uk (Edinburgh Campus) or bordershalls@hw.ac.uk (Scottish Borders Campus) to let us know.

Once you hold your unconditional firm offer, we aim to process your application and email you your offer from July onwards. We aim to email your offer at least 7 days before the start date of the contract.

If you are staying at our Edinburgh Campus, your accommodation contract will state that residents are not allowed to keep cars/ vehicles on campus, as parking is very limited. If you have any further concerns regarding parking, please contact CarParking@hw.ac.uk.

However, parking is available for students staying at our Scottish Borders Campus and is free at the halls of residence.

University is a great chance to meet new people and interact with people with different backgrounds, beliefs and even from other countries. We don't allow sharing with friends as it can create an imbalance in the flat dynamic.

You will be asked to select your first and second room preference and we try our best to offer you these. However, in some cases this is not possible if the room type is fully booked. Inevitably, some room types are more popular than others.

Please ensure any additional information to support your allocation (e.g. male/female only living spaces, quieter area, higher floor etc) is noted on your application. Please note that requests are not guaranteed.

For more accommodation FAQs please visit the University website.
