5 steps to self-care

Remember to look after yourself both mentally and physically

From new people, new surroundings and new rules, the move to university has been more challenging than ever before.

With so much going on, you must remember to look after yourselves both mentally and physically. Take a look at the 5 ways you can ensure you're feeling on top of your game:

1. Eat well

Healthy body - healthy mind! What you put into your body can a huge impact on your mental wellbeing. It might be tempting to get a takeaway or a microwave meal on an evening but these won't be providing you with the nutrients your body needs. Spend some time meal prepping on a weekend or trying new recipes to keep it interesting. Take a look through our Food tab for some inspiration!

2. Stay hydrated

Getting enough water throughout the day has loads of benefits - from keeping your skin healthy to increasing energy levels and brain function. Keep a reusable bottle with you at all times so you can top up on the go

a cup of coffee

3. Exercise

This doesn't mean you have to spend an hour in the gym every day. Going for a walk or a run around campus is a simple way of getting some well needed fresh air and to get that blood pumping. If you're having to self-isolate, then there are always workouts you can try from your room such as these recommended by Priya.

4. Sleep well

Keeping a regular and consistent sleeping pattern can do you a world of good, it will ensure you function at your very best. You want to aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night and avoid using your phone before nodding off. There might be loads of new dramas to binge-watch but try to resist the urge for 'another episode'

5. Keep connected

One of the best things about uni life is the social aspect of living with others and meeting loads of new people. Things might be slightly different this year and it may be tougher trying to find and build new relationships but don't let that stop you - keep your eye out for online events hosted by your Res Life team or HW Union and make sure to check in with family and friends on a regular basis.
