Returning to university after a long break can be a shock to the system, but it can be made easier by trying some simple but effective actions like these:
Start slow and steady
Going from a free schedule into your first long day of lectures or busy study schedule can make anyone feel overwhelmed. Don't be too hard on yourself, it's important to give yourself time to adapt.
Instead of diving head-first into hours of studying, start by creating an achievable and flexible schedule or routine, then build up momentum week after week, making sure to leave enough time for the things you love.
Refresh your space
A clean and comfortable environment can help you feel more productive and in control, so it might be time for a room or study space makeover.
Personalise your pinboard and add visual things that motivate you, your new goals or any study materials. Add a cushion to your desk chair to make it more cosy, and keep a blanket nearby. Restock on essential stationary, notebooks or any course-specific supplies you need for the first term and organise them on your desk. Tidy space, tidy mind!
Sort out your sleep
Any long break may result in breaking healthy habits (we've all been there), including sleep.
To get back into study mode, try going to sleep and waking up at a similar time each day. You can try doing this with alarms, making bedtime and morning rituals that you have to stick to or with apps like Sleep Cycle. Of course there will be times where you'll be going to bed later but getting enough sleep is vital to keeping your brain ready for study time.
Reconnect with friends
One of the best parts of returning to uni is catching up with friends. Reach out to housemates, friends or classmates to share stories from the Winter break. Don't know how? Here are some ideas:
- Organise a group dinner
- Go on a walk together
- Arrange a night in or night out
- Send a simple text or have a phone/video call
- Go to an event in the city
Make time for yourself
Save space in your schedule for activities that help you relax and re-charge, whether it's exercising, skincare, eating your favourite meal or enjoying a good book. Self care is essential to your wellbeing and keeping a healthy work-life balance.
