Your guide to the accessories and essentials your bag NEEDS

As you pack and prepare for your next academic adventure at university, your mind will be filled with an endless list of things to pack, and sometimes this list has a few essentials missing from it.

Here is your guide to the accessories and essentials that should have space in your bag:

Winter warmers 🧦

I know what you might be thinking, “who forgets to pack something warm?” The simple answer is you might remember the main “big” warmer pieces but it’s the smaller items that often get left behind. You should also prioritise these warm accessories when you pack:

  • Warm leggings - these play a vital role as they are great for layering and putting under those stylish jeans (that might not be too warm when worn alone)
  • Scarves & beanies - these small essentials often get left behind, or are remembered just as you run out the door. They are small in size and therefore won’t take up too much space in your bag. Scarves and beanies are essential for keeping our heads & necks warm and can instantly turn a dull outfit into something snazzy.
  • Woollen socks -  We sometimes neglect our feet and think boots are enough to keep them warm. Having a pair or 5 of woollen socks in your bag is highly recommended. Their extra cushion creates comfort and locks the warmth in.

First aid box 🩹

Like your toiletries, a mini first aid box is a must-have when packing for university. You might brush it off and say there is a campus medical centre you can always go to your first aid kit is your go too for reducing the severity of any injuries and preventing infections. Additionally, we don’t all use the same products or take similar meds so having your own preferred supply will help. A tip to remember is to combine your first aid kit with your toiletry list. This can include:

  • Any allergy meds/EpiPens
  • Elastic bandaids
  • Cough/cold meds
  • Eye drops
  • Paracetamol / ibuprofen
  • Antiseptic wipes
  • Gloves
  • Nail grooming essentials & tweezers
  • Personal hygiene products (soaps, foams, face scrubs etc)

A piece of home 🏡

Packing for university means moving to a new area where you will be sharing your living space with different individuals. Sometimes you might get homesick, and adding a few pieces from home can help create a home-like atmosphere. Why not personalise your new space and pack a few of these:

  • Your favourite duvet/blankie
  • Pillow cases
  • Linen
  • Digital picture frame / family picture(s)

Electronics & stationery 💻

Your university will be home for the next year or more, so it’s important to pack all your essentials to avoid buying new things you may already have at home. We live in an era of technological advances so make sure to include everything electronic and techy that will help you stay connected to the rest of the world:

  • Phone charger
  • Laptop & charger
  • Mini laptop fan stand
  • Additional extension cables
  • Ring light (perfect lighting partner for those online presentations)
  • Stationery pack (pens, pencils, notepads, notice board pins and highlighters etc)
  • Headphone/headset
  • Clear plastic sleeve file for all your documents

Documents 📄

You might want to make extra copies for these and keep the originals tucked away safe, however, make sure you have them with you when you pack for university. Such documents may include:

  • Passport & travel documents (VISA)
  • Your unconditional acceptance letter
  • Financial documents (sponsor letters etc)
  • NHS number - for easy registration with a GP
  • Arrival Pass for your accommodation (this can be printed or stored on your phone)
