It is the responsibility of you and your flatmates to keep your kitchen clean to a good standard. To help you out, the University provides a regular assisted cleaning of each kitchen.

Some of them have been here for a long time so they your halls and the University well, so if you have any questions regarding your halls or accommodation, they will be happy to answer these or will know who to speak to assist you.

Your cleaner will clean your kitchen regularly on a specified day, they will normally place a note on your kitchen door the day before. This will give you and your flat mates plenty of time to clear up so that your cleaner can carry out their job.

Please make sure that:

  • Bins and recycling are taken out
  • Oven and hob are cleaned after use
  • Any spills in the Fridge and freezer cleaned up
  • Work surfaces are kept clean and wiped down after use for the next person
  • The floor is cleaned and mopped when neccessary

  • If you make a mess, clean it up, remember one of your flat mates will need to use the kitchen after you!
  • Use the QR code that is on your notice board to report any maintenance issues for your kitchen or room

You and your flat mates are expected to clean to an acceptable standard, and you have responsibility for keeping your kitchen clean. If you like to make your meals together and then please clean up together. If you do not, that's okay too, just be sure to clean up the area that you have used, so that the next person can use after you.

Your warden will deliver a cleaning rota after Welcome week, but you can also also download it here or pop into the Hub to collect a printed copy. We strongly recommend flatmates to sit together, to ensure that everyone is aware of their kitchen responsibilities. Agree on this soon after you move in to avoid disputes later on. Not sure what an assisted clean entails? We've answered all your FAQs below...

It is your responsibility to keep your kitchen clean and tidy. To help, your kitchen will receive an 'assisted clean' from the cleaning staff of the Residences Team on a regular basis.

An assisted clean includes a wipe-down of worktop surfaces, the floor swept and mopped

The assisted cleaning does not include tidying mess, throwing away rubbish, cleaning or putting away dishes, removing excess rubbish or recycling.

All worktops must be clear, the sink empty and dishes put away. The floor should also be clear from mess and excess rubbish and recycling removed.

If the cleaning staff are unable to access the worktops and/or floors due to excess mess or rubbish, your kitchen will not be cleaned. You are expected to rectify this before the next cleaning day. If this does not improve, a cleaning charge of £15 per kitchen user may be issued.

The cleaning team will leave a notice on your kitchen door stating when your kitchen will be cleaned.

No, the cleaner will only clean the kitchen.

ResLife recommends politely addressing your concerns to your flatmates and suggesting implementing a cleaning rota. If this does not resolve the issue please contact reslife@hw.ac.uk.

Email reslife@hw.ac.uk who will pass on your query to the relevant cleaning team.
